Mayor's Charity

The Angel Boat (Angel Community Canalboat Trust) was chosen as the Mayor’s Charity 2008/09 by Islington’s Mayor, Councillor Stefan Kasprzyk. Together with the Islington Boat Club ("IBC") we were the Mayoral Charity under the name and logo Islington Kids Afloat.
We arranged a year of fundraising events - see menu on left. The result was a cheque for nearly £17,000 each for The Angel Boat and Islington Boat Club. In the picture above Councillor Kasprzyk presents his cheque to ACCT chairman at the charities AGM on 24th June 2009.

In announcing his choice of mayoral chairty the Mayor, Councillor Stefan Kasprzyk said:
"In my year as Mayor of Islington for 2008/09, I have chosen as my Mayoral Charity The Angel Boat (Angel Community Canalboat Trust) and Islington Boat Club (“IBC”) The two charities have decided that, for their fund-raising activities during this year, they will be known collectively as Islington Kids Afloat.
It is my hope to make a difference to young people’s lives in Islington by helping to give them the chance to experience safe but challenging physical activities, while broadening their horizons and obtaining greater opportunities for the future.
Both of the Islington Kids Afloat organisations are well established Islington charities. Both charities provide activities, training and education in the broadest sense for children and young people throughout the Borough, on and around the wonderful resources of the Regent’s Canal and the City Road Basin – a water based adventure playground.
IBC aims to develop life skills by providing an affordable, constructive outlet for young people’s natural energy and enthusiasm and by encouraging excellence through water-based activities (kayaking, sailing and power-boating) centred on its clubhouse and facilities on City Road Basin.
The Angel Boat (ACCT), based at City Road Lock, provides young people with educational and recreational trips and opportunities to develop life skills on day and residential trips in which, as a team, they help to operate a purpose-built steel narrowboat and adapt to life on board under the guidance of a professional skipper.
Both charities cater for children and young people from the diverse local communities and are dependent on fundraising and donations to maintain their important work. The activities of Islington Kids Afloat form part of broad educational programmes in which young people not only obtain practical skills, but also gain confidence and learn about themselves, other people and their environment.
Please join me in helping Islington Kids Afloat."
